"Find ways to change the rules of the game . . . so that we can use our IS resources to win" Corporate CEO

This quotation from Neumann's book 'Strategic Information Systems' eloquently summarises the essential purpose of a SIS - to help organisations to do things better, to win. It also indicates the central theme of this page and of the pages directly linked to it - the strategic use of information systems.

What do we mean when we talk about 'the strategic use of information systems'? For the purposes of these pages we define an information system to be strategic if it is aligned with business goals and strategies and if it has an impact on organizational performance. The learning resources accessed from these pages provide guidance about how information systems can be used strategically to transform the operations of organisations and of entire economic sectors. Understanding the strategic potential of information systems is arguably the key to obtaining significant value from information system expenditures. This has been, and is continuing to be, one of the most significant challenges facing IS personnel. The topic is also of considerable interest to many senior executives in other functional areas.
